Some tests — such as fasting blood sugar and lipid profile — need 8 to 12 hours without food for accurate results.
Do
- Book a morning appointment so that you fast overnight
- Drink plenty of plain water, which also makes the blood draw easier
- Take your regular medication unless your doctor advises otherwise
Avoid
- Chewing gum, tea, coffee or smoking during the fast
- Heavy exercise on the morning of your test
- Fasting longer than 14 hours, which can distort results too
